The Art of Italian Cinematography and Beyond

A film for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympic Games. Conversation with cinematographer Luca Ciuti, CCS

On 19 March, 6:06, directed by Tekla Taidelli, opens in cinemas — an independent film built around a targeted distribution strategy, rooted in a direct relationship with audiences and theatrical venues. The Rome premiere takes place on Wednesday 19 March at 21:00 at the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, where the film begins a three-week run accompanied by special events. In Rome, it will also screen on 20, 21 and 22 March at Cinema Azzurro Scipioni.

6:06 stars Davide Valle and George Li, from a screenplay by Tekla Taidelli, Edoardo Moghetti and Davide Valle. The cinematography is by Tommaso Lusena De Sarmiento, CCS, who also serves as producer; editing is by Fabio Nunziata; production design by Alice Rocchetta and Antonio Fiscina; costumes by Silvia Segoloni and Alice Rocchetta. The score is composed by Davide Valle. The film is produced by Tekla Taidelli, Tommaso Lusena De Sarmiento, Roberto Santos and Lorenzo Carvelli for Argo Film, Tranky Film and Filmesdamente, distributed in Italy by LSPG Popcorn. An Italian–Portuguese co-production.

Tommaso Lusena, CCS, told us:
«This film by Tekla Taidelli is one of those works that remind you why you chose to make cinema — why you stepped behind the camera, why you decided to listen, to observe. Our work as cinematographers is, very much, about listening, about staying close, about searching for the image that belongs to the story we want to tell. With Tekla, from the very beginning, we chose Cooke Pankro S3 prime lenses for the black-and-white sequences, while the road movie sections were shot handheld with lightweight Angenieux EZ zooms, giving the actors the freedom to move as they wished. The approach was built, at least in part, around long takes — because that way the actors were free, able to live inside the scenes without interruption. When Tekla first told me about the road movie idea, I said: “Tekla, I have to use the zoom — no stopping.” Because these were takes of five, even seven minutes. Something you rarely do in fiction… ».
