Born in Rome in 1960, he pursued his education at the Gaumont Film School, an educational experiment initiated by Renzo Rossellini, then president of the French company in Italy. He later attended the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, where he worked on Valerio Jalongo’s thesis film, Dream City.
He has worked on films for both cinema and television, collaborating with directors such as Peter Del Monte, Carlo Mazzacurati, Nanni Moretti, Daniele Luchetti, Valerio Jalongo, Michele Soavi, Paolo Virzì, Christian Duguay, Jan Michelini, Giacomo Martelli, and Adam Bernstein.
Nominated six times for the Ciak d’Oro, he won one for Caos calmo by Antonello Grimaldi. He also won a Nastro d’Argento for Habemus Papam by Nanni Moretti and received three David di Donatello nominations for Io e Napoleone by Paolo Virzì, Caos calmo, and Habemus Papam.
His personal research focuses on naturalism and the realism of the image. He follows the work of the best in the industry as a keen observer of cinema and TV series. He considers being men and women of our time a fundamental priority, a basic goal, and an essential driving force for producing meaningful images.
He is part of the group of cinematographers who, in the 1990s, contributed to the revival of cinema, particularly in terms of technical and aesthetic aspects, helping to renew an industry that was struggling to innovate both in imagery and in its methods of production.
