Listen to the Hollywood Party episode on Radio 3 Dedicated to Collettivo Chiaroscuro

On Tuesday, 11 March, on Hollywood Party, the Rai Radio 3 programme dedicated to cinema, Collettivo Chiaroscuro (www.collettivochiaroscuro.it) was introduced—our association that brings together cinematographers with multiple objectives, including networking for professional matters, fostering dialogue between different generations of DOPs, and promoting education and the dissemination of cinematographic visual culture.

The voices representing the Collettivo on the radio were those of four great artists: Paolo Carnera (President), Luca Ciuti (Vice President), Sara Purgatorio (co-founder and board member), and Debora Vrizzi (active in the events group).

Connecting from set, Paolo Carnera spoke about the needs that led to the formation of the Collettivo, how the association is addressing recent legislative issues concerning cinema, and its mission to share knowledge across generations and promote visual culture. Luca Ciuti, drawing from his professional experience in London, where associations have a strong tradition, explained how the Collettivo aims to provide everyone with insight into the artistic vision and approach of Italian cinematographers. He highlighted how the profession is often mistakenly seen as purely technical, whereas, like all film professions, it is deeply artistic. Ciuti also spoke about his work in designing the Collettivo’s website and Chiaroscuro magazine. Sara Purgatorio shared her experience working between Mexico and Italy and how the Collettivo network played a fundamental role in helping her find a welcoming professional environment upon returning to Italy. Debora Vrizzi emphasised how the Collettivo provides essential professional support, fostering the sharing of techniques, resources, and knowledge.

Both Sara Purgatorio and Debora Vrizzi were invited by host Alberto Crespi to discuss the gender gap, particularly the lingering stereotype that cinematography is a predominantly male profession. They shared their challenges but also highlighted the significant progress being made and reaffirmed that gender equality is one of Collettivo Chiaroscuro’s key objectives.
