He was born in Turin in 1980. When he was three years old, he was given his first toy camera, which was red… it was just the beginning. At six, his father gave him another camera, also red, but unlike the previous one, it was a real camera, and he was tasked with photographing the summer vacations. Photography became an obsession, intermittently accompanying his entire adolescence. At university, he enrolled in the newly established DAMS program in Turin with the idea of becoming a director. Involved by a classmate in the making of a short film, he went on set and discovered the role of director of photography, which combines cinema and photography. After that experience, he decided to pursue this path and traveled with a director of photography to Bologna. There, he began working as a camera assistant in independent cinema, assisting various DPs. Meanwhile, he also started the more traditional path in Turin, beginning as a video assist.
These were years of great creative ferment and genre-blending. Between Turin, Milan, and Bologna, he began to sign his first music videos for established Italian artists. For a while, he continued this dual life, which allowed him, in the role of assistant camera, to learn from observing things he would later apply on his own sets. Thanks to the world of music videos, after an initial period in Milan, he arrived in Rome, where, at 26, he had the opportunity to work on his first feature film, Chi nasce tondo, directed by Alessandro Valori and produced by Pier Giorgio Bellocchio for Digitaldesk, with which Gallo would collaborate for several years.
His continuous search for new languages led him to deepen his knowledge by attending international masterclasses ranging from classical to experimental cinematography. He continues to work as a director of photography, navigating various forms of visual language: video art, commercials, music videos, and cinema. In recent years, he divides his time between Turin, Milan, and Rome, alternating between fiction work, documentary cinema, and advertising spots.
