The Art of Italian Cinematography and Beyond

CARLA LONZI, DENTRO E FUORI DAL MONDO by Francesca Archibugi in Venice today. Cinematography by Daria D’Antonio CCS

Carla Lonzi, dentro e fuori dal mondo, the new documentary by Francesca Archibugi, with cinematography by Daria D’Antonio, an associate member of Collettivo Chiaroscuro, will be presented this evening, 5 September, at Giornate degli Autori. Selected as a Special Event, the film will have its Press/Industry screening at 10.00 pm in Sala Corinto; the official screening will take place tomorrow, 6 September, at 11.00 am in Sala Perla, followed by a Q&A.

Through archive material, testimonies and previously unseen documents, Francesca Archibugi reconstructs the public and private life of Carla Lonzi, an art critic, writer and central figure in Italian feminism. Alongside the radical and uncompromising intellectual, the film reveals her personal vulnerability, her complex relationship with motherhood and with her partner, her conflicts and exchanges with other women, as well as the legacy of a body of thought that continues to challenge the present.

The project also grew out of a personal connection: Archibugi met Lonzi when she was very young, and in the film she returns to that relationship, seeking a balance between personal memory and historical reconstruction, while bringing Lonzi’s thought into dialogue with issues that continue to shape women’s experiences today.

The cinematography is by Daria D’Antonio CCS, who has also been in the spotlight in Venice in recent days after receiving an award at the inaugural edition of ELLE BNP Paribas Women in Venice: the Best Director of Photography Award, recognising one of the leading cinematographers in contemporary Italian cinema. The award comes during a particularly significant season for D’Antonio, following her Nastro d’Argento for the cinematography of Paolo Sorrentino’s La grazia and her work on Damiano Michieletto’s Primavera.

Carla Lonzi, D'Antonio

Carla Lonzi, dentro e fuori dal mondo also marks Daria D’Antonio’s first collaboration with Francesca Archibugi, following the cinematographer’s long-standing professional relationship with Cristina Comencini and her collaborations with filmmakers including Paolo Sorrentino, Pietro Marcello, Jasmine Trinca and Damiano Michieletto.

The documentary, written by Francesca Archibugi herself, is edited by Jacopo Quadri and Isabella Guglielmi, with music by Battista Lena, Carla Lonzi’s son and a long-standing collaborator of the director. Among the many voices and figures featured in the film are Maria Consagra, Silvia Giambrone, Maria Edgarda Marcucci, Nanni Moretti, Giulio Paolini, Suzanne Santoro, Carla Subrizi, Paola Ugolini and Giovanna Zapperi.

Produced by Fandango and Luce Cinecittà with Rai Cinema, Carla Lonzi, dentro e fuori dal mondo has a running time of 80 minutes. International sales are handled by Fandango Sales.
