For the Art City 2025 edition, the spaces of Fondazione Gajani will be transformed through the work of two different artists, collaborating for the first time: Isabella Tortola and Debora Vrizzi. One is a photographer; the other a filmmaker and video artist.

Curator Sara Papini aims to establish a dialogue and narrative with Carlo Gajani and his spaces—both foundation-gallery and artist’s home—by overturning the perspective of those who, as visitors, will enter the exhibition during the event.

What happens when a place expected to be filled with art is instead emptied of everything? What meaning would this produce in the spectator’s mind? This act of erasure is not intended as a negation of Gajani’s art but rather a shift in meaning—an elimination reminiscent of Emilio Isgrò: erasing to reveal the paradox, playing with the obvious and with the expectations of those who, perhaps for too long, have taken what is before them for granted. In this way, art, no longer a mere commercial object, stripped of banality and predictability, reclaims its strength and space, asserting itself loudly through its very absence.

On one side, Debora Vrizzi presents the projection of her two videos, Blinding Plan, in which she playfully and virtually removes all the artworks from certain museums. The final result is a deafening sequence of people observing, scrutinising, and contemplating emptiness. What are we really looking at?

The second section features Isabella Tortola’s architectural photography, showcasing a series focused on emptiness and aesthetic parallelism. Stripped of any objects deemed superficial—almost to the point of paradox—her compositions speak of absence and solitude, in stark contrast to Gajani’s photographic work.

Official partners of the exhibition include Cantiere Bologna, Ratpark Magazine, the annual Videoart Yearbook review, Ibrida Festival of Intermedia Arts, Juliet Art Magazine, and Fatavideo.it, the transfeminist video art archive.
