Debuts tonight in prime time on Rai1 GERRI, a detective series with Alfredo Betrò CCS on photography

Debuting today, May 5, in prime time on Rai1 GERRI, the new series produced by Cattleya – part of ITV Studios – in collaboration with Rai Fiction, felf FICTION and with the support of the Puglia Region, Fondazione Apulia Film Commission and PugliaPromozione. Based on the novels by Giorgia Lepore published by Edizioni E/O, the series recounts the investigations of Inspector Gerri Esposito, played by Giulio Beranek, a young policeman of Roma origins grappling with complex cases, family drama and a past that comes back to demand answers.

The cast also includes Valentina Romani, Fabrizio Ferracane, Irene Ferri, Roberta Caronia, Lorenzo Adorni, Cristina Pellegrino, Tony Laudadio, Cristina Cappelli, Carlotta Natoli and Massimo Wertmüller.

It is directed by Giuseppe Bonito, with a narrative structure that alternates between choral storytelling and a subjective look at the protagonist. The subject is by Donatella Diamanti and Sofia Assirelli, who also sign the scripts for the six episodes.

The technical cast includes Alfredo Betrò CCS on cinematography, Lorenzo Campera onediting, Ettore Guerrieri on set design, Patrizia Mazzon on costumes, Giuliano Taviani and Carmelo Travia on original music, Marco Grillo on sound, Stefania Rodà on casting, Arianna Dell’Arti on set direction, and Simona De Laurentiis and Noemi Vitali on post-production.

Filmed in Apulia, GERRI is a sentimental noir that combines emotion, realism, tension and irony, with a strong authorial imprint and a tormented and magnetic protagonist. Each episode focuses on the most fragile, and Gerri’s personal story is deeply intertwined with the investigation.

GERRI will air every Monday in prime time on Rai1 and will also be available for streaming on RaiPlay.

Photography note by Alfredo Betrò CCS

The Gerri series is the fourth work I am making with Giuseppe Bonito, after L’Arminuta, Brenner and Mike. Before a project there is always a long preparation meeting, where we talk about the script and how to visualize the story,
starting from a series of reference points that each of us proposes, seeking a common path. Gerri is a very particular policeman, with a dramatic personal experience that comes back to him very often, although the narrative leaves room for many comedic situations. We shot in Puglia, in many beautiful and challenging locations. For the project I chose the RED Gemini and a set of Leitz Summicron C optics supplied by Panalight. I worked for the first time with a very good chief electrician, Maurizio De Pol, accompanied by the chief cinematographer who has been working with me for several years now, Luca Pagliara. I would also like to mention the two camera operators, Alessandro Gentili and Valerio Brescini, who did an excellent job. Color grading by the extraordinary Giovanni Bivi, senior colorist at the Flat Parioli lab, a true Stachanov who is very passionate about his work and whom I have known since he worked at Technicolor.
