The Art of Italian Cinematography and Beyond

We report the screenings of the film DEER GIRL in Rome and Milan. Cinematographer: Debora Vrizzi CCS

We are pleased to announce the special screenings in Italy of Deer Girl by Francesco Jost. Cinematographer: Debora Vrizzi CCS. After its appearance at the Swiss Solothurn Festival, the 59th Solothurner Filmtage, Deer Girl comes to Italy for two special event screenings in Milan (18/11/24 – Anteo Palazzo del Cinema, 9:15 PM) and Rome (19/11/24 – Cinema Adriano, 8:30 PM).”What is love?” asks 25-year-old Rachele in a chat. Starting from her parents dancing at their 25th wedding anniversary party, Rachele takes us through the dynamics of love, which often conceals violence, submission, and possession. Marked by the toxic relationship between her father and mother, and seeking her path to freedom in love, Rachele desires revenge and kills the alpha stag her father never dared to shoot.

Debora Vrizzi CCS shares: «With director Francesco Jost, we worked to translate the complex and distorted emotions of the protagonist visually. We primarily shot with the ALEXA Mini and Atlas Orion anamorphic lenses, often framing through physical elements like aquariums, crystals, glasses, and liquids to emphasise Rachele’s altered perception of emotional reality.Water, a liquid, guides and accompanies us as a leitmotif throughout the film. For instance, we illuminated an aquarium with torches to project the shadows of fish and immerse the protagonist in an underwater-like environment—a metaphor for apnea, for something held back. The colour palette we used is partly inspired by the paintings of Balthus, a reference employed not only in terms of colour grading but also conceptually, aiming to convey the film’s psychoanalytic component through light and colour».
