Francesco Costabile was born in Cosenza in 1980 and studied at DAMS in Bologna. He graduated in Directing at the CSC – National Film School, where he made several short films including Dentro Roma, winner of the Nastro d’Argento for Best Short Film. He collaborated with Gianni Amelio and made two documentaries on maestro Piero Tosi. He made his feature film debut in 2022 with Una femmina, inspired by Lirio Abbate’s book Fimmine ribelli; presented at the Berlinale, the film received two David di Donatello nominations and two Nastro d’Argento nominations. In 2024 he directed his second feature, Familia, presented at the Venice International Film Festival – La Biennale (Orizzonti section) and inspired by the true story of Luigi Celeste. The film won the Orizzonti Award for Best Actor (awarded to Francesco Gheghi), two Nastro d’Argento awards and a David di Donatello. It also received other important mentions and recognitions, including the Nuovo Imaie Talent Award for Best Debut Actress (Tecla Insolia) and the Cinema For Unicef recommendation.
Giuseppe Maio Before Familia, among his most notable works are Mia, Anima bella and Manuel by Dario Albertini, Come pecore in mezzo ai lupi by Lyda Patitucci, Una femmina by Francesco Costabile, the television series Romulus, and the science fiction film Mondocane by Alessandro Celli, the latter two produced by Matteo Rovere’s Groenlandia. While most cinematographers currently active in Italian cinema began their careers shooting on film before moving to digital in the 2010s, with Anima bella, presented at the Rome Film Festival in 2021, he chose to experiment by shooting a feature film on film stock. In 2024, the Gianni Di Venanzo International Award for Cinematographic Photography honoured him with the Jury’s Special Prize “Marco Onorato”.
