The Art of Italian Cinematography and Beyond

Giuseppe Riccobene

Giuseppe Riccobene began his training in 1996 with a course in camera operation, editing and directing. He took his first steps in the world of fashion productions before moving into news coverage, following war correspondents during the Balkan conflict and covering foreign affairs around the world. His adaptability led him to work alongside numerous documentary filmmakers in extreme and remote locations: from the Arctic Circle to Cuba, passing through various regions of Africa.

He was called upon to cover major sporting events such as the Superbike World Championship and the Ferrari Challenge, and took part in RAI productions linked to the Lotteria Italia, the Sanremo Music Festival, and other major live events. In 2000 he became the owner of Steadicam equipment. The following year he began working on film sets, initially as B-camera/Steadicam operator, and later as A-camera/Steadicam operator.

After several experiences as second-unit DoP, in 2016 he signed his first feature film as Director of Photography with Il banchiere anarchico by Giulio Base, presented at the 75th Venice International Film Festival, winner of the Persefone Award and selected for the 2020 Golden Globes. Again with Base came Il maledetto (2022), distributed on RaiPlay, followed by the theatrical features Albatross and Il Vangelo di Giuda, released respectively in 2025 and 2026.

During the same period, he began new collaborations with director Beniamino Catena and, in 2025, shot L’insabbiato, the debut feature by Rosario Petix. On the television front, he worked on second units for several RAI series for Rai 1, including Doc – Nelle tue mani, winner of the 2022 Nastri d’Argento for Best Dramedy TV Series. In 2024 he served as Director of Photography on the television film Margherita delle stelle, directed by Giulio Base and starring Cristiana Capotondi, which received major awards nominations and strong critical and audience acclaim.

His vision extends beyond Italian borders: he has worked in the Middle East on a production shot in Riyadh and followed a documentary project in southern Morocco, experiences that further enrich a career always shaped by encounters with different contexts and cultures. Throughout his professional life he has had the opportunity to collaborate with directors such as Liliana Cavani, Carlo Lizzani, Lina Wertmüller and Marco Risi.
