The Art of Italian Cinematography and Beyond

It will be presented on May 20 in Cannes, FUORI by Mario Martone. Cinematography by Paolo Carnera CCS. The film will be in theaters from May 22

At the Cannes Film Festival 2025 comes Out, the new film by Mario Martone, the only Italian title competing for the Palme d’Or. The film has its world premiere on May 20 and will be released in Italian theaters on May 22, distributed by 01 Distribution.

Set in Rome in 1980, Fuori is inspired by a real episode in the life of writer Goliarda Sapienza. Played by Valeria Golino, Goliarda enters prison for stealing some jewelry and forges deep bonds with a group of young female inmates. The film recounts with intensity the dialogue between women, made up of solidarity, anger and redemption, in an everyday life that rekindles in Goliarda the desire to live and write.

Completing the team are Carmine Guarino (set design), Loredana Buscemi (costumes) and Maricetta Lombardo (sound).

PAOLO CARNERA TOLD US:

We were inspired by the cinema of John Cassavetes, choosing a free shooting technique to put the actresses at ease in front of the camera and offer them the opportunity to improvise, expressing themselves to their full potential. For this, the technical tools – camera, lenses, lighting and support equipment – had to be simple and flexible, so as to ensure true freedom of shooting, with minimal preparation time. I used romantic optics with warm tones to compose bright and sweet images, capable of restoring the beauty of summer light and thefiery atmosphere of the Roman summer. I needed slightly vintage lenses and a constantly moving camera to best evoke the free and vibrant spirit of the 1980s in Italy. Fundamental was the collaboration with Carmine Guarino (set design) and Loredana Buscemi (costumes): together we built a warm and harmonious color palette, in tune with the mood of the film and the era in which our story is set.
