The film is produced by Pega Production. The cast includes actors such as Eugenio Mastrandrea, Giulia Petrungaro, Giorgio Colangeli, Daphne Scoccia, Francesca Della Ragione, Lena Sebasti, Margherita Coldesina Pola, Silvana Luppino, Anna Maria De Luca and Francesca Tiziana Russo.
Cercando Itaca follows the journey of an eighteen-year-old, Arianna, who finds herself guiding a lost Ulysses. Through their journey, we explore Calabria’s historical and artistic heritage, visiting places such as Pentedattilo, Riace, Capo Vaticano, the abyssal beach of Punta Pezzo and Cannitello, Scilla and Charybdis, Aspromonte, Crotone, the Temple of Hera Lacinia, Palmi, Melicuccà and Reggio Calabria. In this latter city, particular attention is given to its museums—above all the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria—and to the bergamot citrus groves, for which Reggio Calabria has been recognised as the ‘City of Bergamot’ within a UNESCO context. Through interviews with scientific experts, the film offers an overview of Calabria’s millennia-old and vibrant port and commercial activities, highlighting the unparalleled beauty of this Italian region.

CINEMATOGRAPHY NOTE BY Maura Morales Bergmann
“The film offers an original and profound reinterpretation of the Ulysses myth — his eternal search for home, happiness, and the deeper meaning of existence. It is a symbolic journey back to one’s roots: a prophetic dream draws the protagonist back to her native Calabria after she has settled in Germany, where the figure of Ulysses — emblem of quest and uncertainty — guides her in rediscovering the wonders of her homeland. We shot the German sequences in Calabria, giving them a colder, harsher look, while the Calabrian section — conceived as a tribute to the region’s nature and culture — is warm and enveloping. It was a privilege to shoot in Riace, where Mimmo Lucano built a community around migrants, and on the beaches of Palmi; and, above all for me, to finally work underwater — a long-held passion. Shot in a documentary style, with diegetic and available light, by a small crew on ARRI Alexa Mini with Hawk V-Lite anamorphic lenses provided by REC. Underwater operator Maura Morales Bergmann, Steadicam operator Marco Vignoni, focus puller Elena Chiappa, camera assistant Pietro Sacco, data manager Jonathan Elia“. .
