Produced by Gaetano Di Vaio and Giovanna Crispino for Bronx Film, Minerva Pictures, Eskimo, and Rai Cinema, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) and the Sicily Film Commission, Tre regole infallibili is a family and coming-of-age story. Claudia, a young single mother, and Bruno, her teenage son, fall in love at the same time. Will they be able to love in a way different from what they have known so far, while keeping their new romantic lives in balance with their family life? The film stars Cristiana Dell’Anna, Matteo Olivetti, and Guglielmo Aquaro.

Corrado Serri, the film’s cinematographer, explains:

Director Marco Gianfreda brought together in this first feature film several themes he had already explored in his short films and in his experience as a screenwriter for films by other directors. At our first meeting, he came with a few visual starting points that we then developed together. He wanted the film to be characterized by cobalt blue, powder blue, and red. This also became the basis for my collaboration with production designer Massimiliano Forlenza and costume designer Isabella Rizza. Marco wanted a cinematography that was both realistic and interpretative of reality, one that would take the poetic license of tinting a room monochromatically by filtering natural light through a colored curtain or through the choice of wallpaper.

One of the film’s themes, and a very intimate aspect of himself that Marco wanted to portray, is the beauty of nature and the possibility of immersing oneself in it. In the film, a kind of pantheism coexists with secularism, just as drama and lightness coexist. Translating these dualities into images without resorting to banal choices was the most interesting challenge—and exactly what the film needed.

The organic quality of the Super 16mm format was another of Marco’s references. The aspect ratio we chose is also that of Super 16mm: 1.66:1. However, we did not shoot on film; instead, we opted for large-format digital. Together with colorist Christian Gazzi, we gave the film a color curve emulating Kodak 200T 7213 and a grain texture—closer to that of 35mm than 16mm.
