The Art of Italian Cinematography and Beyond

On the occasion of the theatrical release of Bugonia, we highlight the interview with cinematographer Robbie Ryan, conducted by Alessandro Chiodo CCS.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film Bugonia has arrived in Italian cinemas. Following the success of Poor Things, the director returns with a dark and provocative project. Presented in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, Bugonia explores themes of paranoia, conspiracy, and existential crisis, blending grotesque humour with sharp reflection.

We also highlight the interview with cinematographer Robbie Ryan, conducted in English by Alessandro Chiodo CCS on the occasion of the film’s Venice premiere as part of the Casa Chiaroscuro project, with filming by Piero Gobbi and Leonardo Kurtz, editing by Giacomo R. Bartocci, and backstage photos by Leonardo Paniccia.

Casa Chiaroscuro is a project that brings a CCS team to film festivals to create content for the Collettivo’s social media and website. Through Casa Chiaroscuro, Chiaroscuro aims to engage with both Italian and international cinematography, discover new works and emerging talents, reconnect and meet in person the great masters of cinematography, follow and support the successes of its members, and more broadly promote a widespread culture of the image. The project has been made possible thanks to the support and trust of our sponsors and friends Canon, Frame by Frame, and Fotodiego, to whom we express our gratitude. The lenses used in the video are a custom 1.5x anamorphic prototype, mounted vertically (at a 90-degree angle), provided by sponsor Hubris Pictures.
