“Three hundred female hawks left their nests and flew to the rocky island off the southwestern coast; during the journey they sang a long song that only those who understood the hawks’ language could comprehend. Once they reached the Columns, they let themselves fall into the sea like stones and drowned. Since then, the hawks guard that place, they consider it sacred.”
From Passavamo sulla terra leggeri by Sergio Atzeni (Sellerio).
Carried away by the spellbinding pages of this enchanting book by Atzeni – thanks to the insistence of Laura and Franco – I’ve finally decided to exhibit, for the first time, some of my photographs on the theme of the sea, on what remains, and on the traces of light that guide me to the shot. Le Colonne, symbol of Carloforte, which I see slowly worn away by time; the beaches and their patterns, play, and relationships. The island within the island, where I’ve now lived for years, and the coastal places that have left their mark on me. Gherardo Gossi
