From 2 July, Separazioni, the new film directed by Stefano Chiantini, is in Italian cinemas, with cinematography by Paolo Carnera CCS. The film is distributed by Fandango.
Presented in the Zibaldone section of the 2025 Turin Film Festival, Separazioni tells the story of Mara (Barbora Bobulova) and Pietro (Adriano Giannini), a couple whose apparent stability is suddenly upended by a bereavement. From that moment on, the film explores how grief and loss seep into family relationships, undermining equilibriums and certainties.

In his director’s notes, Stefano Chiantini describes Separazioni as a story about the transformation of bonds, built through rigorous formal research, dilated pacing and a strong attention to the visual dimension. The choice of black and white and the evocative role of nature thus become essential elements of the narrative, helping to shape the characters’ emotional journey.
Alongside Barbora Bobulova and Adriano Giannini, the cast includes Vanessa Compagnucci, Giordano Fochetti, Sergio Albelli and Ludovica Rubino. Cinematography is by Paolo Carnera CCS, editing is by Luca Benedetti, production design by Elisabetta Zanini, costumes by Marta Passarini and music by Piernicola Di Muro. Produced by Andrea Petrozzi for World Video Production and Rai Cinema, with the contribution of the Ministero della Cultura and the support of Regione Lazio and Regione Abruzzo, Separazioni is an Italy-France co-production.
Paolo Carnera describes the film as follows:
«A majestic landscape to tell a difficult, inconceivable yet cathartic process of grieving. The mountain, freedom and pain ».
Collettivo Chiaroscuro wishes Carnera and the entire crew every success for the film’s release in Italian cinemas.
