The Art of Italian Cinematography and Beyond

The Collettivo Chiaroscuro remembers with deep sadness its colleague Marco Incagnoli

The Collettivo Chiaroscuro remembers with profound sadness Marco Incagnoli, director of photography, teacher and professional who spanned over five decades of Italian television and cinema, leaving a lasting mark both on the practice of cinematography and on the training of entire generations of camera operators and directors of photography.

Born in Rome in 1950, he began his career as a camera operator in the late 1960s, before going on to work extensively at RAI, where he was responsible for the cinematography of programmes that have become part of the history of Italian television, among them Mixer, Telefono Giallo, Chi l’ha visto? and numerous editions of Domenica In. He subsequently continued his career as a freelance director of photography, collaborating with the major national broadcasters and contributing to television productions, drama series, sitcoms, documentaries and live entertainment, including Camera CafĂ©, Grande Fratello and numerous television and music events.

Alongside his professional work, Incagnoli devoted a significant part of his life to teaching. For many years he was lecturer in Film and Television Camera Technique at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, sharing with hundreds of students his experience on set and a deep knowledge of light, the camera and the audiovisual language.

His career was marked by a constant attention to technical innovation. Over the course of his working life he developed lighting solutions for reality television and continued to experiment with new tools and approaches to camerawork, combining craft expertise with technological research.

With the passing of Marco Incagnoli, the world of Italian cinematography and television loses a professional of great experience, one who was able to move across different eras and visual languages while keeping alive a constant curiosity towards the evolution of the craft.

The President, the Board of Directors and all members of the Collettivo Chiaroscuro extend their heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him and of sharing with him a human and professional journey.
