The Art of Italian Cinematography and Beyond

The Nastro d’Argento Speciale ‘Otto per gli Ottanta’ for cinematography goes to Francesca Amitrano CCS

On the occasion of the Nastri d’Argento’s eightieth anniversary, the Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani celebrates the contribution of women to Italian cinema with a special award honouring eight professionals who have shaped, across different fields, both the history and the present of the seventh art. Among them, Francesca Amitrano CCS, associate director of photography of the Collettivo Chiaroscuro, who will receive the award today at the Teatro Argentina in Rome.

The award is born under the sign of Anna Magnani, the first woman to receive a Nastro d’Argento, in 1946, and aims to celebrate the contribution of women to the Italian film industry, looking at once to the memory and the future of cinema. The roll of honour will be opened by Monica Guerritore, actress, writer and director, long committed to preserving and celebrating Magnani’s legacy.

Alongside Francesca Amitrano, the award will go to actresses Alba Rohrwacher and Teresa Saponangelo, directors and screenwriters Francesca Archibugi and Laura Samani, producer Tilde Corsi, costume designer Nicoletta Ercole, and continuity supervisor Chiara Milani.

For the Collettivo Chiaroscuro, the recognition awarded to Amitrano carries a particular significance. A director of photography on numerous films, documentaries and television productions, as well as a filmmaker in her own right, Amitrano is one of the figures who have helped broaden the presence of women in a department historically dominated by men, earning recognition over the years for the quality and sensitivity of her work. We are glad to take this opportunity to acknowledge the other women DoPs in the association: Vittoria Campaner, Valentina Caniglia, Camilla Cattabriga, Martina Cocco, Eleonora Contessi, Daria D’Antonio, Maura Morales Bergmann, Sara Purgatorio, Lucia Rinaldi, Claudia Sicuranza, Debora Vrizzi, Francesca Zonars and to note that their number continues to grow, as does their professional standing.

During the evening, the Premio Speciale BNL BNP Paribas will also be presented to Margherita Spampinato, a Sicilian screenwriter and director, previously awarded the David di Donatello for best debut feature and recognised at the Cannes Film Festival as the best emerging filmmaker of the year.

The Collettivo Chiaroscuro congratulates Francesca Amitrano on this important recognition, which, alongside her professional career, celebrates the contribution of women directors of photography to the growth and renewal of Italian cinema.
