Valentina Caniglia CCS welcomed as a new member of the American ASC

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has officially announced that Valentina Caniglia CCS has been welcomed as a new member. Founded in Hollywood in 1919, the ASC is one of the oldest and most prestigious professional organisations dedicated to the art of cinematography. For over a century, it has been an international point of reference for the cinematography community, with the mission of promoting artistic excellence, technical research and cultural exchange within the field. Each year, the association hosts the ASC Awards, which celebrate outstanding achievements in film, television and music videos. Alongside its awards and recognition activities, the ASC plays a major educational role through masterclasses, workshops and events held at its historic Los Angeles Clubhouse, where historic equipment such as the Todd-AO lens collection is also preserved and restored. The organisation maintains an ongoing dialogue with the industry and film schools, collaborating with companies such as Sony and Red on training and outreach projects. Valentina Caniglia is the first Italian woman to become a member of the association.

Among Valentina’s credits are the feature films Pomegranates and Myrrh, Isola, 3 Days Rising, Quail Hollow and Jesus Land. She recently served as cinematographer on Jesus Land, starring Juliette Lewis and based on the New York Times bestselling memoir by Julia Scheeres, directed by Saila Kariat. Her other credits include 3 Days Rising, a horror-thriller starring Mickey Rourke; the supernatural feature Quail Hollow; the docuseries The Captain, about baseball player Derek Jeter; and the Apple TV+ drama Dear….

Born in Naples, she began her career in London before moving to the United States to study film production at New York University. After graduating, she worked around the world on projects including the Palestinian drama Pomegranates and Myrrh, for which she won the Golden Dagger at the Muskat Film Festival; the Italian drama Isola, presented at the Marché du Film in Cannes 2025; the black-and-white feature Adieu, Lacan; and the documentary The Last Supper: The Sopranos Session.

Her commercial clients include British Airways, Nike and Ford, and in the music video field she has worked with Aesop Rock, The Roots and Miss Peppermint. In 2019, Caniglia was selected for the ASC Vision Mentorship Program, working under the guidance of Tom Houghton, ASC.
