The Art of Italian Cinematography and Beyond

Valerio Evangelista

Grew up in the neighborhood across from the Cinecittà studios, dreaming of worlds made of polystyrene and papier-mâché, where anything was possible and everything imaginable. He graduated from the Roberto Rossellini Institute in 1998 and immediately began working in the film industry, taking on every role in the photography department. He worked for years as a camera operator, both in Italy and abroad, before starting his career as a Director of Photography. He grew professionally with Michele Soavi, collaborating with him for an extended period. He gained experience as a documentary filmmaker for National Geographic and Sky Arte, traveling around the world. He specialized in television series, working as a DoP with Beniamino Catena, Leonardo D’Agostino, and Michele Soavi on Rocco Schiavone, Squadra Antimafia, Rosy Abate, and La Narcotici.

He handled Oltre la soglia and two seasons, the 3rd and 4th, of Bastardi di Pizzofalcone and L’ultimo spettacolo, directed by Monica Vullo. With Luigi Boccia, he worked on the film Scarlett.

La stoccata vincente with Nicola Campiotti.

The short films Il ballo with Susy Laude, which won the award for Best Cinematography at the Mediterranean Film Festival, and Back Home by Marcello De Archangelis, which received international acclaim.

With director Alessandro Capone, he worked on the film Separeted, with Eugenio Cappuccio, the film La mia ombra è tua, and the docufilm Le donne di Pasolini. He collaborated with Laura Chiossone on the production of Odio il Natale 2.

With Matteo Oleotto and Nicola Abbatangelo, he worked on Doc 3. For Amazon, he worked on Costiera, second unit with Giacomo Martelli. He is developing a strong knowledge of virtual set technology on LED walls and is currently engaged in overseeing the cinematography for the international series Sandokan by Jan Maria Michelini.

His approach to cinematography is instinctive and tied to an intuitive vision of image and light.

He loves channeling light, making intense, sometimes symbolic, use of it.
